LISA KUEHNE, Math Programs Coordinator

Lisa Kuehne, Math Programs CoordinatorB.A. Mathematics, Boston College; M.S. Mathematics, Washington University

314-935-4226 ~ lmkuehne@wustl.edu

Ms. Kuehne has been involved with the Department of Mathematics since 1992, initially arriving at Washington University as a graduate student. As University College Coordinator for Mathematics, she is reponsible for scheduling and hiring instructors for evening and summer mathematics courses as well as advising mathematics students and developing new courses to expand the program. As Math Programs Coordinator, Ms. Kuehne manages a team of more than fifty student mentors who serve hundreds of undergraduate mathematics students each semester through a network of help desks, study groups, individual appointments and residential academic services. Under her management and instruction, the Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) program for Calculus has continued to expand, from six groups for Calculus I in Fall 2004 to over fifty groups in Calculus I-III in Fall 2012. This program serves first-year students who are still learning how best to cope with large lecture classes and the demands of college courses by providing an upperclassmen as a guide and mentor as the students work on challenging problems together in a small group setting. First-year students are the primary patrons of the Residential Peer Mentor (RPM) program, which has also recently expanded to include all residential colleges housing first-year students on campus. Ms. Kuehne teaches the Seminar in Academic Mentoring (SAM) for new Calculus PLTL leaders each fall and the Practical Applications of Academic Mentoring (PAM) course for all Calclulus PLTL leaders each semester, as well as a training course for new RPMs and Academic Mentors each fall. Ms. Kuehne developed and continues to teach the Calculus component of the January Intensive Program (JIP) and has been involved in other Cornerstone initiatives designed to ease students’ transition into and between college courses.
