2010 January Intensive Program in Chemistry and Calculus
The January Intensive Program (JIP) is an advanced preparation for Washington University students enrolled in Spring Semester Chemistry 112, Chemistry 262, and Calculus 3.

Science and math at the collegiate level require intense studying, review, and practice!
JIP is a five-day review and advanced preparation program designed just for students in introductory chemistry and mathematics courses. It is intensive, the sessions can run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and attendance is mandatory.
Students transitioning from fall semester to spring semester classes can enroll in one of three JIP sessions:
- Chemistry 111 review – Preparation for Chemistry 112A
- Chemistry 261 review – Preparation for Chemistry 262
- Calculus 2 review – Preparation for Calculus 3
Completing finals and transitioning from winter break make it hard to focus on the semester ahead. In just five days, JIP reviews core concepts and principles, ensuring students have a strong foundation in entry-level chemistry or calculus before advancing to more difficult material.
JIP Produces Results!
In 2004-2005, over 40 percent of the students who participated in JIP received a higher grade in Chemistry 112A than they received in Chemistry 111A.
JIP is tailored to the needs of each individual student. Instruction will be designed based on a review of the student’s first semester course grade and additional assessments, including one taken on the first day of the JIP program. JIP will emphasize review of the fundamental concepts to ensure mastery of the basics, introduce new concepts to come in the spring semester and, as appropriate, offer an advanced preparation section emphasizing new material.
Sessions are small, highlighting individual work with the instructor. Enrollment is limited to no more than 30 students for each section. In addition to group sessions, upper-class mentors – students who have demonstrated academic success in the subject matter and who have been recommended by department faculty – are available to help students one-on-one.
The January Intensive Program runs from January 10 to 15, 2010. Tuition is $550 and must be paid in advance. A completed application and $550 payment are due by November 23, 2009 . Application forms and instructions are available here. For more information, call Cornerstone at (314) 935-5970.
Enrollment is limited and students will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students participating in JIP will live in their regular dorm rooms during the session.
JIP is intensive – sessions run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. Attendance is mandatory; students sign a letter of commitment to participate fully in the session.
